Leon Danchin, wildlife artist (1887 - 1938)
Born in Lille (France) on 21 June 1887.
Léon Danchin is the second child of the family Danchin. They will be six, but none other than himself would become a painter.
His father Albert took over the family weaving factory. His mother Margaret, receives frequently in them large house in Lille. For centuries, the cradle of the family Danchin is located in northern France, Anchin in Hainaut hence the origin of the name.
Besides the commitment to the North, Danchin share a passion for animals. The grandfather then the father of Leon are passionate hunters and early Leon will observe attitudes of many of the family dogs and make sketches and drawings.
It is at the Beaux Arts de Lille he became student in the workshop of the sculptor Jean Joire who teaches him the study of horses and dogs.
First sculptor, it will send several bronzes exhibitions to Salon of French Artists from 1907 to 1911.
In returning from the war, he becomes engaged to Simone Meesemaecker and married her in 1919
The artist sculpts still on order but was increasingly drawing. It then meeting the best editor of Parisian prints of the time : Devambez.
For ease of working, the family is close to Paris and lives in Chantilly and Leon shape his entire series on horses drawn in Devambez lithography. First works encountered immediately a great success and sold very well in France but also Belgium, the USA and England.
But having homesick of the country, Danchin moved again and settled in Bergues, in the french Flanders.Léon hunting from morning to evening every day.It was during this period that will draw Leon Danchin hunting scenes that will make its celebrity. Like any good hunter is primarily the work of dog he is interested.He now a recognized style and has long been interested in the work of Japanese mastersToyokuni, Hiroshige, Hokusai, among other things, it inspires them to develop sets of engravings of hunting (reeds, shrubs, miniatures, ...)
He died suddenly on 04 August 1938 in Bergues, where he is buried. He was 51 years.
